[edit] Background

Baal forms the triumvirate known as the Prime Evils, along with his older brother, Mephisto, and his younger brother, Diablo. Since the beginning of time, the Prime Evils have fought the forces of Heaven. The Lesser Evils grew tired of the conflict. Andariel; Maiden of Anguish, Duriel; Prince of Pain, Belial; Lord of Lies, and Azmodan; Lord of Sin overthrew the Prime Evils, thinking that they forever banished them to Sanctuary. There, the Horadrim, with the help of the Arch-Angel Tyrael, attempted to capture and imprison the brothers within three soulstones.

However, Baal's Soulstone was shattered, and the shards could not contain him. The Horadrim Mage Tal Rasha, in an honorable effort of self-sacrifice, offered to use his own body to contain Baal. He was sealed in a tomb with Baal's spirit inside of him, but being mortal, was corrupted by Baal.

In Diablo II, Diablo, with the help of Marius, frees Baal, in Tal Rasha's body, from his bonds. He ultimately reclaims his soulstone from Marius, killing him, leading to the events of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.

[edit] Physical Appearance

The Lord of Destruction is almost spider-like in his appearance. When confronted in Diablo II, Baal moves on four insectoid legs.

Compared to his brother Diablo, Baal still retains some humanoid features, most likely from his inhabiting of Tal Rasha's body. Granted, it is only his upper torso, which is pale, emaciated, and skeletal.

Most likely one of the most recognizable traits of Baal is his Festering Appendages, tentacles that manifest in various places on his body. In battle, Baal summons these from the ground to impede the player's path. Similarly, in the opening movie sequence to Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, Baal conjures these appendages from his hands to gruesomely slay a Barbarian.

[edit] Powers and Abilities

Similar to Mephisto, Baal tends to be more sorcerous than Diablo. However, while Mephisto tends to focus on Lightning themed abilities, Baal has skills with a cold trend.

Besides his powerful Hoarfrost ability that players confront, Baal also uses his Festering Appendages to many uses, as stated previously.

[edit] Trivia

Baal was voiced by Milton James in both the cinematics and in-game, although in the credits, he is credited under his alternate name, Richard Barnes, and under his real name, Milton James.
