Help:Categories
From Diablo Wiki
Categories are used to categorize and sort pages in the wiki. They are required to keep track of a very large amount of pages, articles and files that would otherwise be very hard to find. With the help of categories, one can easily:
- Check if a file has already been uploaded, instead of uploading a duplicate.
- Search for articles and check if a topic is already covered, as well as what articles might be missing in a certain category.
- Check what other articles exist on the same subject if the links in the article don't link to it.
Using categories keeps the wiki structured and organized, which is preferable both for readers and editors. This help page will cover how exacly to utilize categories.
[edit] Usage
Categories are added like regular wiki links
[[Category:Name of category]]
Adding a category like this will always create a link at the bottom of the page, regardless of where it is put in the page. It is good practice however to always add page categories to the very bottom of the page.
If you wish to provide a link to category without placing the article itself there, put a colon before it like this
[[:Category:Name of category]]
This will create a regular link in the text that can be clicked.
[edit] Naming
All categories should be lowercase unless it's a name or the first letter. For example, Diablo II would always be capitalized, but set item would not.
Correct usage
[[Category:Diablo II belts]] [[Category:Diablo II skill icon images]]
Incorrect usage
[[Category:Diablo II Belts]] [[Category:Diablo II Skill icon images
If the category deals with a specific subject, it should be clear in the category name what that subject is. Naming a category about Diablo II set items [[Category:Sets]] isn't specific enough. Instead, use [[Category:Diablo II sets]]
[edit] Categorizing Categories
Categories also have to be put into their own categories, to form a tree-like structure all the way up to the root, Category:Browse. From there, it should be possible to reach all categories in the wiki.
- Article Stubs include articles that are stubs. this is handled by stub templates, no need to ever manually direct an article here.
- Content is where most game articles go. Anything that included classes, skills, items, monsters, game mechanics and so forth go into thos category.
- Images is the category where all images uploaded to the wiki go.
- Lore includes all article that explore the backstory of the Diablo Universe
- Organization includes pages related to the structure of the wiki, including templates, help pages and similar.
- People include real life people who are somehow tied to the Diablo world. It can be Blizzard employees, writers and so forth.
In most of these there are numerous subcategories. Try not to put the same page in both a mother category and child category. For example, Category:Boots has a child-or-subcategory called Category:Diablo II boots. Do not put a pair of boots into both of those categories, but choose the appropriate one.
However if a category isn't a subcategory of another, you can include the page into both.
